The soffit usually is 6 inches or less in width and simple in design.

Exposed rakes often are on sheds or cottage homes.
For lookouts on deeper overhangs i use 2x6s on edge so i frame the rake 51 2 inches lower than the top of the rafters.
After the end points of the plates are located the length is found using a base 1 triangle for a 6 in 12 pitch where the hypotenuse is 1 118 times the length of the base.
For a shallow overhang less than 18 inches i use 2x6s on the flat so i typically frame the rake wall 11 2 inches shorter measured square to the rafter than the elevation of the rafter tops.
